Tongariro Crossing

Widely called the finest one-day walk in New Zealand — 19.4km across an active volcano.

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing runs 19.4 kilometres one way through the heart of Tongariro National Park, taking most people six to eight hours. It crosses a genuinely active volcanic landscape of steaming vents, old lava flows and startlingly coloured crater lakes.

New Zealand’s first national park

In 1887 Te Heuheu Tūkino IV (Horonuku), paramount chief of Ngāti Tūwharetoa, gifted the volcanic peaks to the nation to protect them from being carved up and sold. Tongariro became the country's first national park and the fourth in the world.

It now holds dual UNESCO World Heritage status for both its natural and its cultural value — a rare combination, recognising that the mountains are ancestors to Ngāti Tūwharetoa, not merely scenery.

Mount Doom and the Emerald Lakes

The near-perfect cone of Ngāuruhoe (2,291m) played Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings. Climbing it is now strongly discouraged — it is both sacred and badly eroded — but it dominates the first half of the walk.

After the steep grind up the Devil's Staircase and across South Crater, the track climbs Red Crater, the highest point at 1,886m, then drops down loose scree to the Emerald Lakes, whose colours come from dissolved minerals leaching out of the surrounding thermal ground.

Blue Lake beyond them is tapu — sacred. Do not touch the water and do not eat beside it.

Treat it as an alpine crossing

The name is not decorative. Weather can move from calm sun to horizontal sleet within an hour at any time of year, and the exposed sections have no shelter. People are rescued from this track every season, usually because they came in cotton and running shoes.

The route is one-way, so you need transport: shuttles run from National Park village, Whakapapa and Tūrangi, dropping at Mangatepopo and collecting at Ketetahi. Parking at Mangatepopo is limited to four hours specifically to force shuttle use.

In winter (roughly May to October) the crossing becomes a mountaineering route requiring ice axe, crampons and experience, or a guide.
